Pros And Cons Of Adult Learning - 1859 Words

Usually when we learn something new we tend to distinctly look at it from two different aspects: analysing its logic and variables, and this is exactly the role behind a theory where a set of concepts and definitions explains or predict a situation by specifying logic and variables (Edwards, 2005). Edwards argue that when we deeply engage with a theory we are now theorizing as a practise, where we involve abstractions, contemplation, critical engagement, and imagination to make sense of the theory. Donovan Plumb and Michael Walton, following Hebermas theory, they argue that adult learning requires three humankind theories that we can never neglect, and they are technical, humanist and critical. They argue that those three theories should†¦show more content†¦It has been used in many situations that call for behaviour modification. These modification methods are taught to adults who will use them to change their own behaviour when they wish to lose weight, quit smoking, or al ter another aspect of how they behave. However, when it comes to the learning approach, behaviourism has many limitations. Proponents of this method would agree that the only evidence we have or require of a learner gaining knowledge is from observing their behaviour. To them, a learner has learned something if he or she can do the task after instruction that they could not do before. Learning is seen as an end product that takes place as a result of reinforcement or operant conditioning (Hiemstra, 1994). Learning is viewed as an impact on behaviour, attitude, assumptions, confidence and world view of the learner, thus one can discover that behaviourism and the humanistic approach have several elements in common. Now I would like to go in depth and talk to you a little bit more about humanistic vs. behaviouristic. Both the behaviouristic and the humanistic approaches believe the self-directed learning style. Humanism takes this idea one step further and requires that an individual must take responsibility for their learning, and that this can be applied to the instructional process. To a humanist, the process of learning, and learning how to learn, becomes more important than the outcome.
